The Colossus
concept
embrace fragmentations and the absurd
The idea is inspired by Silvia Plath’s The Colossus, which is a poem about mourning and melancholia while she uses the Colossus as an imagery signifying the fragmented, lost object. I want to create this piece as a site for mourning of the conceptual loss of homeland due to both the political upheaval happening right now and my personal demographics which transforms my identity as a cultural hybrid that does not have a specific place of belongingness. Structural wise, the box has a mise-en-abyme feature with a gigantic person looking into the box from the outside, alluding to the panopticon model of surveillance that is going on my fragmented homeland. The fragmented colossus in the box, as what Silvia Plath is using in her poem, is the symbol of this loss while the characters in the box is trying to rebuild it. Yet, none of the attempts thrive. Everything remains its free-falling status with little possibility to reconnect.
ideation
process
I started with 3d scanning my head and edit the model in Blender. Afterwards, I import the assets into Blender and tweak with the lightings to construct the stage. I value the play of rations regarding the human sizes and the natural objects. By scaling up the human bodies, I aim to further convey the idea of fragmentation and absurdity.
